book report set up The book I read is called Go Set a Watchman by chapter outline dissertation proposal Harper Lee. In The Sun Compare! It follows some of the same beloved characters from her award-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird , checking in on them about 20 years later. Both books are set in dissertation, Maycomb, a small rural town in Alabama, which is in the and contrast our 23rd-most populous state. Outline Dissertation! Although Alabama was not known as an intellectual center in the mid-1950s, which is when this book takes place, Harper Lee describes the town as “saved from thesis, being another grubby little Alabama town by the proportion of professional people.#8221; Then she spends the outline rest of the book giving detailed examples of how the town is sun compare and contrast packed full of annoying, empty-headed racists. The main character of the book is Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird, who is now 26 and calling herself Jean Louise, a very unfortunate name change in my opinion. She has come home for chapter a visit with her arthritic 72-year-old father, Atticus Finch: a lawyer who is a raisin and contrast essay beloved far and wide as the chapter outline dissertation big-hearted civil rights advocate from parsons resume, To Kill a Mockingbird . Atticus now lives with his status-obsessed snob of a sister, Aunty Alexandra, who Jean Louise refers to as “the enemy.” Jean Louise sees that many things have changed in Maycomb in the years she has been living in New York.

Her brother Jem has died. Her childhood friend Hank wants to marry her, which she’s not really into. However she is 26, which in 20th century years was like our present-day 46, so she is thinking, “I guess I should do it. I’m really getting up there.” However, Aunty Alexandra is against it. “We Finches do not marry redneck white trash,” she says, which as you will see turns out to be kind of chapter dissertation a whacked thing to say considering where this story is headed. Unfortunately it is of operations essay not until 37 percent Kindle that Jean Louise finds a racist pamphlet from a Citizens#8217; Council at dissertation proposal her dad’s house and order of operations essay, the book finally starts to chapter outline dissertation, get going. The pamphlet is full of the N-word and warnings about “mongrelizing the race.” Back in the 1950s, people were very fearful of order of operations “mixed race marriages” because they didn’t know yet that it was going to lead to a world full of incredibly hot-looking people like Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, and Rashida Jones.

Also our 44th president, President Barack Obama. Reading the hateful pamphlet makes Jean Louise feel sick to her stomach. But when she goes to throw it in the garbage, Aunty tells her to stop. “There are a lot of outline truths in that book,” she says. Jean Louise is parsons resume so disturbed by this that she sneaks in to one of these council meetings, where she is majorly grossed out to chapter dissertation proposal, see not only parsons resume her dad but also Hank getting all chummy with a bunch of completely disgusting racists. Jean Louise, who, like everyone, grew up reading To Kill a Mockingbird , now realizes for dissertation proposal the first time that her father is not the same Atticus Finch that he was in that book. Everything she knows to be true in essay, her life now seems like a lie. She is so sickened by this that she vomits.

This is just one of the dissertation emotional vomitings in this book. I counted four. All are caused by racism, not a stomach flu or other virus. From this point on, the book focuses on a young woman trying to essay on there are no without, come to grips with the fact she belongs to a family full of grotesque poseurs. Although there are also a lot of flashbacks to proposal, Jean Louise’s funny childhood (like the time she thought she was pregnant because someone kissed her, and the time she wore falsies to a dance), to be honest, I would have enjoyed them more if they were connected to and contrast, some kind of story. Any kind of story. Seriously, by 50 percent Kindle I was starting to get that sick feeling like when you have paid to see a movie and you can tell in the first 15 minutes that nothing good is going to happen for the next hour and proposal, a half. By 60 percent Kindle I was going, “Please, Harper Lee, make Jean Louise kill someone or let her discover that the racists are also running a child molester ring.

Or how about if all of research paper them fall into dissertation proposal a portal from another dimension?” Finally , by about 85 percent Kindle, Jean Louise confronts Atticus about essay, his new personality and is shocked when he admits that he doesn’t believe all men should be allowed to vote and he does believe that black people shouldn’t be allowed on chapter outline dissertation, juries. He says to Jean Louise, “Do you want Negroes in our world?” to which she totally should have said, “No, Atticus. You are right. Let#8217;s just have a world full of white lawyers. That will work out so much better. Could the whole bunch of you possibly be more basic?” Before the book ends, Jean Louise also calls her pseudo-fianc e, Hank, “a scared little man” and order, “a hypocrite.” However, Atticus defends him, saying, “Hypocrites have just as much right to live as anyone.” To which Jean Louise was probably all “Perfect!

Thank you, Atticus. Chapter! Again you have shown me the path so at thesis for abortion paper last my fantasy can come true. Outline! I will finally have the chance to get married to scibendi, a hypocrite. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.” The main point of Go Set a Watchman is that Jean Louise must learn to accept that her father is just a man. He is flesh and dissertation proposal, blood, and that means he has earned the right to thesis research paper, be flawed. Her uncle warns her that she must not confuse him with God. Dissertation! (But in of operations essay, my opinion, Atticus has had such a personality change since he was a young man that if he were my father, I might insist that he go in for a full physical and a brain scan.) Summing up, I do not really recommend that you add Go Set a Watchman to your summer reading list. If you must read one Atticus Finch book this summer, why not re-read To Kill a Mockingbird . And while you do, remind yourself to be glad that J.D.

Salinger died before he wrote a sequel to The Catcher in the Rye about chapter outline, how Holden Caulfield turned into a sexual predator and Phoebe was arrested for elder abuse. Merrill Markoe (@Merrillmarkoe) is an Emmy-winning comedy writer and New York Times best-selling author. Her latest book, Cool, Calm and Contentious , is available now on Amazon.

Marcel Mauss ‘The Gift’ – Critical Review. Catherine Lucas: January 2012. Marcel Mauss: The Gift: The Form and Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies. A Critical Review. This essay will critically explore Mauss’ theories and findings relating to gift reciprocation, honour, and the concept of ‘free’ or ‘pure’ gifts without agenda. In the process of doing so I will incorporate the outline dissertation proposal, usage of these concepts by a variety of theorists writing on contemporary themes of gift use and exchange in scibendi modern societies. Although Mauss’ most acclaimed work in the influence of dissertation proposal, following anthropologists and sociologists, “The Gift” has encountered many criticisms where certain hypothesises appear to conflict with contemporary practices. Although focused on archaic societies, I will endeavour to show throughout the essay in a balanced manner, how we can use Mauss’ ideas in scibendi an enduring way when looking at certain aspects of economical and gift exchange systems in contemporary anthropology. In order to begin to explore these three areas, we must first understand the outline proposal, ‘Potlatch’, the score, system through which gifts are exchanged, encompassing the acts of giving, receiving and most importantly in the text, the dissertation, way they are reciprocated. As Mauss has it:

“The potlatch itself, so typical a phenomenon, and at the same time so characteristic of parsons resume, these tribes, [Melanesian and Polynesian] is none other than the system of gifts exchanged.” (Mauss, edited in 2001, p.45) Particularly focusing on the Polynesians, Mauss shows us how from the development of this “whole system of gifts and this form of exchange” (ibid, p.26) we can trace societal meanings of generosity and chapter responsibility of wealth. Generosity is the focus of the first part of the essay, and for abortion research paper from this we look at concepts of outline proposal, honour. Scibendi! Finally, we can engage with contemporary criticisms to challenge theories surrounding the notions of ‘free’ gifts. The Obligation to Reciprocate: Generosity and Greed. Mauss explores the obligations on dissertation proposal, us to give gifts and order essay more importantly to reciprocate that which is given – in either equal or greater value than that which was received.

In each given example of the practices and rituals of gift giving in a diverse variety of societies, (Hindu, Germanic, Roman, etc.) although the practice of gift exchange and the reasons behind them may differ, Mauss consistently impresses on us the constant re-encountering of the obligation to reciprocate gifts. The value of the chapter proposal, returning gift is essential to maintaining alliances between parties and partial relations; giving too much may incur as much offence to the recipient as returning goods or services with too little value. Mauss’ method of impressing this upon us through examples and folk tales of social ramifications from these errors serve to put the practical aspects of these theories into context. Mauss also uses the original native word in the subsequent Mother language for these exchanges, which are crucial to understanding the original symbolic meanings of the order of operations essay, gift exchange. If there is one criticism that I must give to chapter outline dissertation proposal, his attempts, it is to the lack of consistent translation that Mauss is occasionally guilty of when evaluating words against others from thesis research paper, different languages.

For example, in exploring Germanic terms alongside Hindu, the un-translated words may be compared for the intricacies in their meanings, without re-evaluation of these given words. The denseness of information requires careful translation references on the part of the reader, in order to glean a full understanding of their symbolic connotations. However, it should be noted that Mauss attempts simple translation of the root and the inherent symbolic meaning of unfamiliar words wherever necessary to differentiate a classification of ‘gift’. Out of the obligation to give gifts, one can further explore the symbolic nature of generosity. Looking at wedding gifts in Germanic societies, Mauss gives a keen example of this symbolism by looking at the meaning behind the giving tradition: “In a few places the generosity of these gifts is proof of the fertility of the young couple.” (Mauss, 2001 ed. Outline! p.78) Generosity versus greed is an integral theme to the underlying moral intention inherent in gift exchange. A recurring notion is that “the recipient puts himself in a position of dependence vis-a-vis the donor” (ibid p.76) and by this notion Mauss illustrates the intricate moral balance inherent in gift exchange. If we view the gift exchange as a moral contract there must be moral implications to how much is given and why. Gifts of too great a value, in the wrong context , may denote ill feeling towards the recipient of the object or service rendered.

It shows a vulgar display of wealth intended to ‘flatten’ the recipient, and scibendi implies a challenge of chapter, further reciprocal wealth. This display is very different to generosity of given wealth. It is a display intended to challenge rivals. Mauss explores the fear of scibendi, being ‘beaten’ by superior gifts in his initial exploration of the Potlatch and its three main obligations, “to give, to receive, to reciprocate,” by focusing on the element of prestige acquired by dissertation giving a gift of essay are no, high value. It is the chapter outline dissertation proposal, issue of being obligated to accept a gift you fear being unable to for abortion, match in reciprocation that is the focus here. As Mauss asserts: “The obligation to outline dissertation proposal, accept is no less constraining. One has no right to refuse to attend the potlatch. To act in this way is to show that one is afraid of having to reciprocate, to fear being “flattened” [i.e. losing one’s name]…to admit oneself beaten in advance…”(Ibid p.52)

To be ‘beaten’ by a gift is to show inferior wealth, and also inferior generosity by failure of appropriate reciprocation. Mauss uses direct and firm language when expressing this idea, further cementing its importance in the theory. The physicality of the language – the notion of being ‘flattened,’ implies a physical presence of this shame on the beaten party, and the resultant sore effect on their societal standing. Gregory cites Mauss’ influence on anthropological interpretation of “competitive gift exchange systems” in his essay on ‘gift exchange …in contemporary Papua’ (Gregory, 1980) in essay which he explores the symbolic ‘destruction of wealth’ in chapter dissertation proposal ritual gift offerings to gods as well as other men, and the idea that wealth that is distributed generously will be revisited on them. He suggests that better than the giving of wealth to other men, the giving of it to gods enforces a faith in the power of the in the sun compare essay, gift exchange and the power of the obligation to outline, reciprocate the gift, even if it is not in a material sense. He looks to wealth gathered by the Church and by a raisin in the sun compare charitable organisations, and the faith from the benefactor that these gifts will be used in chapter a manner befitting the sacrifice. In practice, he sees that monetary wealth in particular is used for many other uses by the beneficiary than that which it was intended. It is parsons resume, interesting to note that this essay looking at a contemporary although to some extent tribal society (village societies in Papua New Guinea) that still carries rituals as a part of its symbolic nature, does no longer fully align with the ideologies surrounding generosity and greed that Mauss perceives in archaic societies, particularly in Melanesia and Polynesia, which are noted influences in outline dissertation proposal how Gregory approaches his subject.

Mauss refers to both Polynesian and Melanesian archaic societies where he addresses these questions of “honour and parsons resume credit” (Mauss, 2001 ed. Outline Proposal! p.42) and its importance in the ‘system’ the gift and the reciprocated gifts are generated through. As symbols of a raisin sun compare and contrast essay, social standing, Mauss argues that that which is exchanged serves “to reflect somewhat directly the manner in which the proposal, subgroups…feel that they are everything to one another.” (Ibid, pp.42-3.) The notion of scibendi, honour acquired or maintained through generous giving is the outline dissertation proposal, driving force between relations with other groups, just as it is in the contemporary society Gregory explores. Giving wealth is a honourable institution, but further to this what we can take from Gregory’s use of Mauss is order of operations essay, that giving without a full sense of how the wealth will be used (here we may read: monetary wealth,) is more honourable still. Critics of Mauss and chapter dissertation Defenders of the ‘Free Gift’ A key contended theme of the text is the scibendi, rejection of the concept of ‘free gifts’ – donations willingly given without necessity of reciprocation.

Mary Douglas explores it immediately in the foreword of the 2001 edition. The rejection of free gifts is contended in chapter outline Laidlaw’s essay “A Free Gift Makes No Friends” (2000), in which he cites the ‘neglect’ to explore free gifts as a product of Mauss’ theories and their influence on cultural anthropologists since. Laidlaw uses the for abortion research, free or ‘pure’ gift as the main emphasis on the subject of the Gift, rather than Mauss who focuses on the gift exchange and the concept of contracts. Largely focused on religious donations or sacrifices, Laidlaw argues that Mauss’ emphasis on the importance of reciprocation destroys the symbolic nature and pure intent of the chapter outline proposal, donation. He argues that the theory of in the sun compare and contrast essay, seeking recognition by giving cheapens the proposal, intent of such a gift. In the course of Laidlaw’s exploration of the order essay, ‘free gift’, he refers to Derrida (1992), who sets out the ‘conditions’ of so-called ‘free gifts’ in order to pursue some form of examination. His first condition is that the free gift cannot be reciprocated at proposal all. Order! This immediately forms a rift with Mauss’ strong analysis of the obligation to reciprocate on chapter dissertation, moral terms.

Laidlaw suggests that a reciprocated gift immediately establishes an “‘economic’ cycle…and make[s] is scibendi, part of an interested exchange…” (Laidlaw 2000, referring to Derrida, 1992), and that to avoid this exchange one must not see the gift “as a gift,” (ibid) but to ignore its occurrence. Outline Dissertation! This he feels is the only way we can prevent the advent of a ‘debt’ that must be paid off. One must ask whether such a theory is possible in practice, and Laidlaw unfortunately fails to offer any fully non-reciprocal practical example of this idea in action. Even if the gift is not socially acknowledged or physically reciprocated, the gratitude that may be extended towards the giver, even in silence, may not be reliably measured, and research is this gratitude in itself not a form of intellectual reciprocation? I shall therefore leave Laidlaw’s critique to the side at this juncture. Perhaps a better critic of outline proposal, Mauss to explore here is Titmuss, whose 1997 book “The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to thesis for abortion paper, Social Policy” focuses on modern blood donations. Titmuss argues that anonymous blood donations may be “the closest approximation in social reality to the abstract concept of dissertation proposal, a ‘free human gift.’” (Titmuss 1997, p.140) Although he shows awareness that blood donors have “some expectation and [need] assurance that a return gift may be …received at some future time,” i.e. if they require a blood transfusion in the future they hope that others will have donated, they have no guarantee of this. Where blood donation passes between strangers, Titmuss argues: “in terms of the free gift of blood to unnamed strangers there is no formal contract …and no explicit guarantee of or wish for a reward or return gift.” (Ibid) In this theory, the gift ‘exchange’ has no place in the context that the gift is given. I can agree with Titmuss’ criticism to score, a point. Chapter Dissertation Proposal! Anonymous donation is without explicit contractual exchange between the donor and recipient, however to underline his argument Titmuss closes that these donations are “acts of free will; of the parsons resume, exercise of choice; of conscience without shame.” (Titmuss 1997, p.140 l.36-7)?* Looking at the action with its psychological implications, I cannot agree that any choice with an chapter outline dissertation proposal, element of conscience can subscribe to an ‘act of free will.’ Rather, there are free- obligation acts, where the recipient through anonymity is free of parsons resume, obligation to reciprocate the gift.

Mauss rarely makes reference to outline dissertation proposal, anonymity in gift-exchange in “The Gift,” which may be an oversight and order of operations essay worth exploring further. Further to this, I would suggest that the donor is tied to the giving of chapter proposal, this ‘free’ gift through conscience; he fears that without his own participation in the donation scheme he may not receive blood himself if required. In this manner the donor is tied to this gift, even when it is the in the and contrast, closest example of a ‘free’ gift; and this returns us to Mauss’ theories concerning morality as examined above. Mauss in his exploration of Classical Hindu Law in “The Gift” keenly illustrates the theory of belief in that any gifts given even ‘freely’ and in “charity and hospitality” are hoped to chapter dissertation, be revisited on the giver at some point: “In this world and rights without responsibilities the next, what is given away is acquired once more.” (Mauss, ed. Chapter! 2001. p.73, quoting a Hindu text.) “It is common knowledge that men present themselves publicly by the conspicuous presentation if gifts. Generous contributions to a charity have always been a source of essay on there are no rights without, prestige in the United States…especially…when such gestures are made by individuals rather than corporations…” says Schwartz (1967) The social standing created through gift exchange is a key element of Mauss’ dialogue and as we have explored, the influence of these theories continue to exert their authority on anthropologists and proposal sociologists today. However, few have attempted the feat achieved by Mauss of encompassing so many societies and their rituals into one area of social exchange. The elements of parsons resume, this discourse discussed in this essay do, I feel, review the key areas inherent in chapter dissertation proposal studying concepts of ‘the gift.’ As Mauss himself concludes, this study encompasses “…science of customs [and]…moral conclusions,” where the gift serves as a tool to analyse the use of “wealth amassed and then redistributed,” and how these exchanges can be used to theorise the symbolism of gifts, behind their practical outcomes of “mutual respect and fico reciprocating generosity.” (Mauss, ed. 2001, pp.106-107.)

Department of History and Art History. For Otago Staff. About University of Otago. Research and Enterprise at Otago. Learning and teaching. International at Otago. Alumni and Friends. Pacific at Otago. All your written work will involve attempts to answer questions about the past.

Markers are looking for answers that are as convincing and as carefully argued as they can be, given the time and evidence available to chapter outline proposal, you. The skills you must mobilise are as much those of thesis for abortion research paper a debater as of a researcher. Try to answer the question that is set. Quite a few essays manage to miss the main point entirely. Consider very carefully what the question or problem means, then organise your evidence as an answer. Every point of your answer must bear directly on the subject, and you must say in so many words how it helps to answer the question.

It is no good leaving it to the reader to make the connection. This is YOUR job, not the reader's. Try giving your essay to a friend to see if he or she can work out the question simply by outline dissertation proposal looking at order of operations your answer. If you have done the job properly - linking each point explicitly to the question - your friend will have no trouble. These are the sort of outline dissertation proposal questions we will ask when marking a piece of essay work: Has the question been understood?

Have the terms of the question been defined? (Use a dictionary; or, even better, an chapter outline, encyclopaedia or a book such as Raymond Williams' Keywords. Order Of Operations Essay! See also Appendix A Key terms.) Have the hidden assumptions of the question been winkled out? Does the outline, question assume things that are not necessarily true Has the significance of the question been understood? What other questions can be tackled once this one has been understood? Is the question important? 2. Construct your own argument: Never simply repeat sections from books or lectures.

At best, this is lazy; at worst, it is score, a dishonest attempt to pass off others' ideas as your own. It will also lose you marks, because we want to see how you can argue. Occasionally, you may experience the thrill of working out and defending a truly novel conclusion. More often, you will end up largely agreeing with one historian or another. Proposal! This is fine, but you must support that historian with your own synthesis of the evidence. Is the argument convincing? Is the argument logically organised? Have alternative answers been considered? Does the conclusion follow from the premises and evidence? 3. Read as much as possible but read wisely: Concentrate on material relevant to of operations essay, the question.

You should normally start with a general book, to get an chapter dissertation proposal, overview of your topic, but then you must move to more specialised works. While encyclopedias and survey textbooks can be useful for gaining a general knowledge about your topic, such reading is not citable research. The bulk of your research should be from fico specialised scholarly books and articles. Try to read critically. Historians must be sceptical. History students should start weighing up the evidence used by scholars, comparing one person’s work with another’s. This is why it is always important to read several books and proposal articles. You should understand the historical debate before deciding which viewpoint you support.

Second, third and fourth opinions help to for abortion paper, inform and enliven a debate. See the section ‘Study Methods’ for advice on note-taking. Always record full details of each source that you use. For books this means the author, title, place of publication, year of publication and of course the page numbers. For articles, note the author, title, name of the chapter outline dissertation proposal, journal, volume number, date of the issue and page numbers. Parsons Resume! Some of these details will save you much needless effort if you wish to consult the chapter dissertation proposal, source again; and all of and contrast them are needed when later you cite sources in proposal, footnotes or the bibliography of your essay. It is parsons resume, often useful to note the outline dissertation, library’s call number for the item as well. Try to organise the material that you are collecting for your essay.

This can be done by following a series of scibendi points or themes, or dividing your evidence for and against a particular argument. Try to be logical, systematic, and coherent. Chapter Dissertation Proposal! Phrases copied word for word from your readings should be enclosed in quotation marks in scibendi, your notes; this will prevent inadvertent plagiarism. 5. Argue from evidence: We are less interested in your conclusion than in the skill with which you support it. Avoid vague, unsupported or sweeping statements. Always argue from evidence, backing up your generalisations with relevant facts. If your statements of fact are contentious, support them with evidence too. It is best not to turn a blind eye to chapter proposal, evidence which favours your opponents.

You should devise an argument which as far as possible does justice to scibendi, all the information available. Is the argument soundly based on supporting evidence? Has the outline dissertation proposal, evidence been evaluated critically or merely accepted at face value? Have alternative answers been considered? 6. Analyse your evidence: It is not enough to in the sun compare and contrast essay, present the facts and arguments you have gathered in your research. You must evaluate the evidence. How reliable is it? Are the sources biased? Is material downplayed in some accounts because it casts doubt on the most comfortable explanation? What does the evidence actually mean?

Most quotations, for example, should be followed by your interpretation: if you recount that Louis XIV said I am the State, you should then explain that he meant that his power as the king of France was absolute. Chapter Outline Proposal! If you fail to scibendi, interpret your evidence, or your analysis is unconvincing, your overall essay will be weaker. 7. Beware narrative: As a general rule, if you find yourself telling a story, you have probably drifted from the point. Ensure your writing is relevant to the question asked. Our questions require direct answers, and they require you to dissertation proposal, construct clear arguments in favour of your answers. (See the example of Tom and Jerry.) This means that you have to arrange your material in order of operations, the best logical order. This will rarely coincide with the chronological order in which events occurred. 8. Outline Proposal! Quote sparingly:

Quotations should be brief and relevant. Used well, they can add colour and drive a point home. Fico Score Essay! When they are over-used, they may make your essay disjointed and prevent you from proposal developing your argument. Thesis Research Paper! Quotations should never dominate your essay.
